Thousands attend Knoxville News Sentinel job fair

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — A tight economy, and limited opportunities bring thousands to a job fair, but with so many people fighting for a few open spots, each had to sell themselves.

Some people Volunteer TV spoke with know, to sell themselves to a company, they can’t give up.

So thousands showed up to the Knoxville News Sentinel Job Fair, with resumes in hand, in hopes they can be one of the select few to land a job.

Several thousand walked in the doors, some with lengthy resumes and some just starting to fill in the piece of paper.

Joseph Davis is one of many who attended and he says, “I need a job.”

Three words all too familiar to many, as they waited patiently in one line to enter the job fair , and then waited in lines at the 25 different companies inside.

Joseph says, “This kind of is a way of networking. It’s a way of finding out what manufacturers are out there, what the job market has in Knoxville.”

And this is one of several job fairs Joseph Davis has attended since the first of year, he says, “Also one over in Oak Ridge, there was a very long line over at that one.”

But the world of job hunting is very different now for Joseph, since he held his last job for about 10 years.

Joseph says, “Everything seems to be online, you have to apply online, very few people are actually taking hard copy resumes.”

But at a job fair, the papers pile up on each table.

And knowing the job market is tight, UT student James Flanagan is trying to plan ahead for graduation day.

James says, “I’m just checking out some employment opportunities and just going to see what’s out there”

With limited job openings, someone just entering the job market can now potentially compete with someone like Joseph, with years of experience.

So Joseph is selling himself, “You’re going to have a lot more people that’s over qualified for things, but then again the resource is there to expand on,” added Joseph.

With experience that can help a company grow, and get a paycheck coming home again.
