Perdue wants restructuring of N.C. gov’t

Gov. Beverly Perdue on Thursday called for a hiring freeze and sweeping changes in state government to close a budget gap estimated at $3.7 billion. Her proposal calls for consolidating 14 high-level government agencies into eight. Perdue didn’t provide estimates of how many jobs would be cut or how much the state would save through the changes.
