TJX Cos. to convert A.J. Wright stores

Off-price apparel retailer TJX Cos. plans to convert 91 A.J. Wright stores into T.J. Maxx, Marshalls or HomeGoods stores and close its remaining 71 stores. The chain’s two stores in Charlotte — at 3201 Eastway Drive and 6029 South Blvd. — will both remain open. Perdue wants restructuring of N.C. gov’t

Gov. Beverly Perdue on Thursday called for a hiring freeze and sweeping changes in state government to close a budget gap estimated at $3.7 billion. Her proposal calls for consolidating 14 high-level government agencies into eight. Perdue didn’t provide estimates of how many jobs would be cut or how much the state would save through the changes. Ingersoll-Rand to add 1,400 jobs

Ingersoll-Rand plans to hire 1,400 heating, ventilation and air-conditioning workers around the world to service commercial buildings. Peak 10 wins Brown-Forman contract

Peak 10 Inc. has landed a data-hosting contract with Brown-Forman Corp., one of the country’s largest producers of spirits and wine. Nucor teams with MSNBC on road show

N.C. growth forecast at 1.4%

The N.C. economy is expected to grow 1.4 percent in 2010, according to UNC Charlotte economist John Connaughton. More than half of the nation’s 100 major markets — Charlotte among them — are rebounding economically, according to an analysis of data compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. PGT Industries to shutter Salisbury operation

PGT Industries will transfer its window- and door-manufacturing operations in Salisbury to Venice, Fla. The move will result in the loss of 490 local jobs, the Salisbury Post reports.
